Background on Restylane® and Perlane®

Restylane and Perlane are made of hyaluronic acid, a natural element of the body. The hyaluronic molecules work by binding to each other and to water molecules within the body, allowing them to hold their three-dimensional structure and to add volume to the surface of the skin. Even after the hyaluronic acid begins to degrade, each molecule continues to bind to water, allowing the skin to maintain its volume for approximately 6 months.

Restylane and Perlane contain no animal proteins, meaning that no allergy testing is required before use. Restylane products are safe, non-invasive alternatives to surgery and an easy way to restore the skin’s suppleness and volume.

At Dr. Stout’s Pasadena office, Restylane and Perlane treatments usually take about 20 to 30 minutes. As he does before administering Botox Cosmetic, Dr. Stout carefully observes your pattern of wrinkling or the natural qualities of your lips, before injecting Restylane or Perlane. This ensures that your results will be beautiful, natural and tailored to your particular anatomy or patterns of aging. Dr. Stout is known for his artistry in performing laser treatments and eyelid surgery, and he approaches Restylane and Perlane treatments with the same eye for form, proportion, and natural results.

Where can Restylane and Perlane be used?

Restylane and Perlane are FDA approved for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from the nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Dr. Stout, however, has found Restylane and Perlane to be effective for various types of wrinkles, such as the forehead lines and crow’s feet.

Are Restylane and Perlane injections painful?

Most patients tolerate the treatment quite comfortably, but for patients who experience a minor discomfort, cold compresses and anesdthetic cream are available in Dr. Stout’s office.

How long to Restylane and Perlane last?

Restylane and Perlane are proven to deliver long-lasting results. Studies show that Restylane and Perlane last about 6 months for most patients, though with Dr. Stout’s skill and attention, many patients find that the products last longer.

What should I expect during a Restylane or Perlane treatment?

Restylane and Perlane require no pre-testing treatment and involve very few precautions. It is recommended that before treatment, patients should avoid aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John’s Wort or high doses of Vitamin E supplements.

Restylane and Perlane are injected directly into the skin in small amounts by an ultrafine needle. As with all injections, some patients may experience discomfort. To increase your comfort, Dr. Stout will assess your need for pain management and determine what technique is right for you.

What should I expect after the treatment?

Immediately after the Restylane or Perlane treatment, patients may apply cold compresses or a cold washcloth to the skin to reduce the potential for swelling. They should avoid exposure to intense heat until there is no redness or swelling.

In addition, patients should avoid touching the treated area for 6 hours after treatment so as to avoid injuring the skin while it is still numb. After that, the skin can be washed gently with soap and water. It is also advised that patients avoid aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John’s Wort, and high doses of Vitamin E for one week after treatment to avoid increased bruising or bleeding at the injection site.

How are Restylane and Perlane different from Botox® Cosmetic?

While both products related to anti-aging skin care, Restylane and Perlane are very different from Botox® Cosmetic. Restylane and Perlane are used to fill or increase the volume beneath the skin’s surface to diminish the appearance of wrinkles, whereas Botox is used to block the nerve impulses in order to relax the muscles from wrinkling. Botox does not provide patients with additional volume to fill in wrinkles like Restylane and Perlane does.
