Dr. Warren Stout specializes in laser eyelid surgery and has been performing stunning eyelid rejuvenations (blepharoplasties) for over two decades. His work is guided by his aesthetic philosophy that values natural-looking results that seamlessly blend with your facial features. When performing eyelid surgery to reverse aging, he strives to bring out your own younger, fresher look, while carefully avoiding an unnatural, startled, or surprised look.
As an Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeon, he is a specialist plastic surgeon rather than a general plastic surgeon. Dr. Stout does not operate on breasts, abdomens, or any other area of the body; he restricts his practice to eyes and has restored a youthful look for thousands of patients. The eyelid area is extremely delicate, and having an ophthalmic specialist perform your blepharoplasty allows for a safe procedure with natural-looking results.
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a procedure to correct the drooping of the eyelids that can come with age. Drooping eyelids can make you look tired or sad, even obstruct your vision. Eyelid surgery can correct this sagging, as well as reduce the bulging pockets of fat that result in under-eye bags.
Eyelid surgery restores a youthful look to your eye area by excising the extra skin and fat that can make your eyes hooded, droopy, and/or puffy. While smaller in scope than other cosmetic procedures, such as face lifts, blepharoplasty can effectively renew your appearance and create a natural look that resembles the look of your eyes in their younger state.
An expert in correcting the plastic surgery mishaps of others, Dr. Stout is renowned for creating a refreshed look without any of the "deer in the headlights" associations of overdone plastic surgery. When you choose Dr. Stout, you can be assured that he will use the most elegant and advanced techniques to restore a youthful, alert appearance.
Our cosmetic surgeon specializes in laser eyelid surgery; that is, blepharoplasty performed through an incision made by a laser beam, rather than the traditional scalpel. This technique has several advantages; first, the laser automatically seals the blood vessels, so the patient experiences less bleeding and the surgeon can more easily monitor the progress of the surgery. In addition, this precise method of forming the incision creates less trauma to the eye area, paving the way for less bruising, scarring, and discoloration following the surgery, as well as a quicker recovery.
On the day of your surgery, expect to spend approximately two hours at our discreet ambulatory surgery center in Pasadena. Accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc., our private surgery center is comfortable and less expensive than a hospital. You will be given sedation and your eyelids will be anesthetized, ensuring that you are at ease throughout the procedure.
When performing laser eyelid surgery, Dr. Stout does not use general anesthesia. Rather, he uses LMAC (Local Monitored Anesthetic Care), local anesthesia with an intravenous sedation, placing patients in a twilight sleep. In other words, patients are given just enough anesthesia to be comfortable and have a pleasant experience, but are not overly sedated.
Dr. Stout is very concerned with the comfort of his patients during surgery. His on-site surgery center in Pasadena makes eyelid surgery simple, safe, and comfortable. During all blepharoplasty procedures, an anesthesiologist certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology administers sedation and monitors the patient carefully.
Bruising and swelling may occur after eyelid surgery, though both resolve quickly. Laser eyelid surgery causes significantly less bruising than older procedures; patients typically come through the procedure with no bruising at all. Many patients complete the procedure with no bruising at all. Swelling should begin to go down the day after surgery, and is usually 50 percent gone within a week. In addition, the majority of bruising will usually be resolved a week after surgery.
The recovery following laser blepharoplasty typically involves little or no pain. In many cases, patients do not even need to take Tylenol as they recover from the procedure. While it's recommended that patients take one week off from work, many patients return to work a few days after undergoing the procedure.
Following eyelid surgery, most patients will be able to resume all their normal activities within a few weeks. In one week after surgery, the majority of patients can resume walking and other light activity; in two weeks, most patients may return to heavy aerobics and other vigorous exercise.
Dr. Stout was one of the first doctors to use the Eyes by Thermage™ system to correct tired, drooping eyelids. In addition to rejuvenating the face, Thermage® treatment is also very effective in improving the appearance of the eyes without a surgical incision. Eyes by Thermage ™ stimulates the production of collagen under the skin, immediately improving appearance and continuing to do so over six months. This restores your youthful and energetic look with little or no pain or discomfort — a significant improvement over older technology.
One of the most wonderful advantages of non-invasive procedures like Thermage® eyelid rejuvenation is that recovery time is short, compared to surgical techniques. With little trauma to the treatment area, most patients experience little to no discomfort after the procedure and can return to work immediately.
Asian double eyelid surgery (so named because it creates a "double eyelid" — an eyelid with a crease and two visual regions) is the most requested surgical procedure among Asian populations in both Asia and America. About half of those of Asian heritage have a low but defined upper eyelid crease, while the other half have a "single eyelid" — no crease, or a vaguely defined one. It is this latter group who contacts our practice in the Pasadena neighborhood of Los Angeles interested in double eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). The majority of those interested are in their 30’s or younger and a growing number of them are men.
A defined upper-eyelid crease makes the eye appear bigger — a universal, not just Western, sign of youth and beauty. Indeed, a defined eyelid crease, such as that created by eyelid surgery of this sort, has long been valued and the desire to enhance the eyelid crease does not necessarily mean the desire to "Westernize" one’s appearance. As in the case for all cosmetic surgeries, reasons for this procedure are varied and individual.
Before surgery, you and Dr. Stout will discuss options for the style and height of the eyelid crease to determine what is best for you. An overly high crease looks unnatural and takes longer to heal; in most cases, the most natural-looking crease is low (two to three millimeters above the lashes) and is tapered toward the epicanthal fold (the crescent of tissue overlapping the nasal corner of the eye). However, some women request a slightly higher crease to aid in the application of makeup.
As distinct from blepharoplasty, in Asian double eyelid surgery, the surgeon alters the anatomical structures of the upper eyelid to form a natural-looking crease that, in most cases, gracefully tapers toward the nose. This procedures makes the eyes appear bigger and more open, and can simplify the application of makeup.
Before double eyelid surgery, you will thoroughly discuss your goals and expectations for your new look with Dr. Stout, starting at your initial, complimentary consultation. It’s important that your goals for double eyelid surgery remain realistic, as the results of the surgery depend on your innate anatomical characteristics. The shape and position of your new eyelid crease will be chosen based on what will look the most natural given your facial features.
As an Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeon with over two decades of experience in eyelid surgery, Dr. Stout is adept at rejuvenating the eyes while protecting their delicate structures. Because of his considerable skill, he is often called upon to revise eyelid procedures performed by other surgeons for patients who are left unsatisfied by any type of previous eyelid surgery.
No two faces are alike; no two eyes are alike. Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeon Dr. Warren Stout recognizes the unique demands of age, gender, lifestyle, and ethnicity. At your complimentary consultation, he will discuss these aspects of your life with you and will consider them during your eyelid rejuvenation surgery.
Many people considering eyelid rejuvenation have concerns. Starting with this website, we hope to allay your concerns and make you comfortable every step of the way. Below, we address a few of the most common patient concerns. If you have further questions or want to learn more, please contact our practice.
Some patients are concerned that they will come out of eyelid surgery with a startled or "deer-in-the-headlights" look. However, Dr. Stout thinks of himself as a sculptor whose goal is to rejuvenate someone's face so that the results look naturally enhanced. Many patients even report that the first compliments they receive after their eyelid surgery are directed toward their hair, weight, or increased level of energy. Their family, friends, and colleagues often cannot pinpoint that eyelid surgery has been done — instead, they simply notice a remarkable improvement in appearance.
Blepharoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for both men and women. At our Pasadena practice, about a third of our eyelid surgery patients are men. More and more male patients are becoming interested in eyelid rejuvenation as they realize how a tired, worn-down look can affect their social, professional, and personal lives.
When performed on a male, eyelid surgery has its own set of considerations. Most importantly, the surgeon must take care to restore the youthful look of the eyelids without giving them an unnatural, feminized look. Dr. Stout commonly treats male patients and has extensive experience in male eyelid surgery: its challenges, its technique, and its goals.
Dr. Stout appreciates the importance of achieving an understated, natural look that blends with the features of the face, especially for male patients. His work reflects his belief that results should not be obvious; rather, they should eliminate a tired expression.
Your complimentary consultation is the perfect opportunity to learn more about Dr. Stout’s unique expertise in male eyelid surgery and to view before-and-after photographs of our male patients to judge Dr. Stout’s natural results.
During their consultation, patients often mention their fear of pain during eyelid surgery. While understandable, this fear is truly unnecessary. The anesthesia administered at our Pasadena surgical center is safe, reliable, and provides each patient with a comfortable eyelid surgery procedure.
