BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic lets us rejuvenate your face using small and safe steps, without surgery.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is excellent in softening crows’ feet, frown lines, and forehead wrinkles. It can even treat migraine headaches! Those in Pasadena or surrounding areas find BOTOX® injections at our clinic to be a convenient treatment for a tired, angry, worried, or frowning appearance.

The Development of BOTOX® Cosmetic

On April 15th, 2002, the FDA approved BOTOX® injections for cosmetic purposes of temporary improvement in the appearance of glabellar lines (lines between eyebrows that give a concerned or angry look). Dr. Stout has successfully treated thousands of his loyal patients medically and cosmetically with BOTOX® Cosmetic for more than 17 years. He uses BOTOX® treatments to relax the frown lines, worry lines (forehead lines), and crow's feet, giving his patients a more youthful and refreshed look.

Allergan's BOTOX® Cosmetic product is the only one of its type, backed by over 20 years of successful clinical experience in therapeutic conditions. In 1989, BOTOX® therapy was approved in the United States for the treatment of strabismus (imbalance of the muscles of the eyeball) and blepharospasm (involuntary spasm of the eyelids) and, in December 2000, for the treatment of abnormal head position and neck pain associated with cervical dystonia.

BOTOX® therapy is approved in 70 countries for a broad range of conditions and is currently being investigated for the treatment of many different medical conditions including hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), post-stroke spasticity, back spasm, and migraine headaches. Still, BOTOX® Cosmetic is best known for its effective, temporary softening of facial wrinkles and creases.

Dr. Stout provides each of his patients with the expertise and skills he has acquired over the last 22 years practicing in Pasadena, during which time he has administered BOTOX® Cosmetic to thousands of patients.

What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified, cosmetic form of the toxin produced by the clostridium botulinum bacteria. Despite being a toxin, the BOTOX® solution does not adversely react with the body. Rather, BOTOX® Cosmetic blocks nerve impulses to muscles.

BOTOX® injections were first used to treat patients with crossed eyes. The medicine was injected in the delicate eye muscles and blocked the nerve impulses to the troublesome muscle. BOTOX® Cosmetic works in the same way on a cosmetic basis, softening wrinkles by weakening the specific facial muscles that contract to form creases.

How Safe Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

For over 17 years, BOTOX® treatments have been used safely and successfully in oculoplastic surgery and for wrinkle therapy. Since the effects of BOTOX® injections are not permanent, possible side effects are temporary and localized to the injection area. At his Pasadena office, Dr. Stout has administered BOTOX® Cosmetic for over 17 years.

How Is BOTOX® Cosmetic Used?

First, the skin is numbed with ointment. A few drops of BOTOX® Cosmetic are injected, using a tiny needle, into the muscle that is causing a wrinkle to appear on the skin’s surface. This blocks the nerve impulse from stimulating the muscle, and as a result, the muscle relaxes. As the muscle stops contracting, the skin overlying the muscle relaxes and the wrinkles in the skin soften.

After the treatment, the wrinkles relax along with the muscles, while the surrounding untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion. This allows you to maintain normal facial expressions.

With his uncommon expertise in administering BOTOX® treatments, Dr. Stout applies the treatment in a thoughtful and careful way. When you visit our office for BOTOX® treatments, you will find that you will lose your wrinkles, but not your facial expressions.

Where Is BOTOX® Cosmetic Most Effective?

It’s most common to use BOTOX® Cosmetic to treat frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead creases, and crow’s feet. However, BOTOX® Cosmetic can be used to treat other areas, like thick bands on the neck, as well as an effective treatment for excessive sweating in the palms or armpits.

BOTOX® Cosmetic can also be used for migraine headache relief. With one BOTOX® injection, your migraine will melt away in minutes and you can be pain-free for months!

Am I a Candidate for BOTOX® Treatments?

You are a candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic if you have a furrow between your eyebrows, horizontal wrinkles on your forehead, crow's feet around your eyes, a constant angry, stern, or overly serious look, or a migraine headache. You are also a candidate if you don't like the way you look in pictures, or people have begun commenting that you look angry or upset when you are not.

BOTOX® Cosmetic has become a popular treatment because it can address a range of problems. Dr. Stout offers complimentary consultations in his Pasadena office. Contact us to see if BOTOX® Cosmetic is right for you.

What Is the Recovery Time after BOTOX® Treatments?

BOTOX® Cosmetic injections may leave red marks for a few minutes at the site they were administered. The mark disappears by the time you return to work from your lunch hour! Typically, patients enjoy the results of BOTOX® Cosmetic for four to six months.

How Long Does a BOTOX® Treatment Last?

Allergan, the manufacturer of BOTOX® Cosmetic, states the effects last about three months. We have found the effects to routinely last four to six months. Our patients usually return a couple of times a year for maintenance treatments at our office in Pasadena. After several BOTOX® treatments, the effects may begin to last longer, sometimes six to eight months in skilled hands and experienced application.

How Will BOTOX® Treatments Affect My Facial Expressions?

When BOTOX® injections are administered by a skilled and experienced cosmetic surgeon, they only rarely affect a patient's facial expressions. Dr. Stout prides himself in softening your wrinkles without immobilizing your facial expressions.

Are BOTOX® Injections Painful?

We use tiny special needles to minimize discomfort, and most patients tolerate this quite comfortably. However, cold compresses and anesthetic cream are available and can be used to numb the skin prior to BOTOX® treatment.

Why Should I Choose Dr. Stout for BOTOX® Injections?

An oculoplastic surgeon (ophthalmic plastic surgeon) like Dr. Stout truly understands the complicated muscular and tissue structure, mechanics, and aesthetics of the eyelids, eyebrows, and forehead. This is why it is wise to choose an oculoplastic surgeon who has undergone extensive, specialized fellowship training in plastic surgery of the eyes. For over 20 years, Dr. Stout has provided each patient with the skills of this unique specialty. He is one of the nation’s rare fellowship-trained oculoplastic surgeons.

Even before the FDA approved BOTOX® injections for blepharospasm (involuntary spasm of the eyelids), Dr. Stout was being referred to patients to surgically treat them for this condition. When the FDA approved BOTOX® treatments in 1989, Dr. Stout found it to be highly effective. Soon after, patients across the country pointed out that it was also softening their wrinkles and fine lines around their eyes. This discovery prompted the use of BOTOX® injections for facial rejuvenation. Some time later, patients also noticed that BOTOX® treatments provided relief from migraine headaches. Studies are currently being conducted that promise to shed light on why BOTOX® Cosmetic works so well to treat migraines.

Since 1989, Dr. Stout has been safely treating patients in Pasadena and across Los Angeles with BOTOX® Cosmetic. His philosophy when performing BOTOX® injections or any other cosmetic procedure is that the results should look natural. His experience and artistic application allows him to pay special attention to each patient's unique pattern and degree of wrinkling.

Restylane® and Juvéderm™

To correct facial hollowness, wrinkles, and to improve your facial contours or lip volume, Restylane® and Juvéderm™, both natural dermal fillers, are excellent choices. Restylane® and Juvéderm™ appear as a clear gel and are made of hyaluronic acid, a natural component of the human body. This gel permeates your dermal tissue and binds to water molecules. Results of Restylane® or Juvéderm™ injections generally last about six months, as the gel is harmlessly absorbed by the body.

Because Restylane® and Juvéderm™ are free of animal protein, they can be administered with no pre-testing or risk of allergic reaction. Restylane® and Juvéderm™ retain their shape using your body’s own moisture, staying soft and supple.

At our Pasadena office, Restylane® and Juvéderm™ treatments usually take about 20 to 30 minutes, and you will walk away with spectacular, natural results. As he does before administering BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dr. Stout carefully observes your pattern of wrinkling or hollowness, or the natural qualities of your lips, before injecting Restylane® or Juvéderm™. This ensures that your results will have the beautiful, natural look of treatments tailored to your particular anatomy or patterns of aging. Dr. Stout is known for his artistry in performing laser treatments and eyelid surgery, and he approaches Restylane® and Juvéderm™ treatments with the same eye for form, proportion, and natural results.

Restylane® and Juvéderm™ are effective treatments for facial creases — including deep nasolabial folds, deep lines near the mouth or jaw line, and lines around the lips — as well as cheek depressions, acne scars and other facial scars, and thin lips. Contact our Pasadena center to learn more about Restylane® or Juvéderm™, or to schedule an appointment.

Thermage®

At our Los Angeles clinic in Pasadena, Thermage® tissue tightening provides a non-invasive method of managing wrinkles and sagging skin on the face and neck. For many, Thermage® is also a non-surgical alternative to eyelid surgery.

Today’s Thermage® treatments are more comfortable and effective than ever. New technology and techniques have revolutionized this treatment, making it less uncomfortable for patients.

Thermage® uses radio frequency to heat the deep layers of skin while cooling the surface of the skin. This heat causes your skin’s collagen to immediately tighten. Further firming of the skin will continues for six months after a single Thermage® treatment session as your body naturally remodels its collagen.

The Thermage® procedure takes approximately one hour, and results can last for years. We may give you medication to manage pain and promote relaxation during the session. For a few hours after Thermage® treatments, your skin will be pink, and some patients experience some sensitivity and swelling. However, no special care is needed after undergoing Thermage® treatments.

According to the manufacturer of Thermage®, ninety percent of patients see a visible improvement in the contour and firmness of their face, neck, arms, or abdomen after just one Thermage® treatment. For further improvement, patients can undergo a second treatment five or six months after the initial session.

While Thermage® is mainly for the face and neck, its stimulation of collagen remodeling can also be used to contour the abdomen and upper arms, and to improve the appearance of acne scars. Additionally, Dr. Stout uses Thermage® to rejuvenate the delicate skin around the eye. He was one of the first to use the Thermage® system in this way, to lift droopy eyelids and eyebrows and tone the area around the eyes.
