What should I look for when choosing a surgeon to perform my eyelid surgery?

Be sure to look for a highly experienced oculofacial plastic surgeon.  An oculofacial plastic surgeon is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is trained specifically in plastic surgery of the eyes and surrounding structures of the face. General plastic surgeons do not receive this in-depth training in eyelid surgery and operate on many different parts of the body rather than specializing in the delicate eye area. In addition, the oculofacial plastic surgeon should be highly-trained and experienced in using a laser instead of a scalpel.  The use of the laser allows for greater precision as well as a quicker recovery than with older surgical techniques.

What are the benefits of cosmetic laser eyelid surgery?

Cosmetic laser eyelid surgery is a long-lasting procedure to correct the appearance of droopy eyelids and under eye bags. Dr. Stout is renowned for restoring eyes to their former youthful state and creating a natural, refreshed appearance for his patients, both women and men.

Dr. Stout specializes in laser eyelid surgery which is performed by making an incision with a laser beam as opposed to a traditional scalpel. This technique has several advantages. First, the laser automatically seals the blood vessels, so the patient experiences less bleeding and the surgeon can more easily monitor the progress of the surgery. In addition, this precise method of forming the incision creates less trauma to the eye area, paving the way for less bruising, scarring, and discoloration following the surgery, as well as a quicker recovery.

What will the laser eyelid surgery procedure be like?

On the day of your procedure, expect to spend approximately two hours at our discreet and comfortable ambulatory (outpatient) surgery center in Pasadena which is accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc. (AAAASF). You will be given sedation and your eyelids will be anesthetized, ensuring that you are at ease throughout the entire procedure.

What kind of anesthesia will be administered for laser eyelid rejuvenation?

When performing laser eyelid surgery, Dr. Stout does not use general anesthesia. Rather, he uses LMAC, which is a local anesthesia with an intravenous sedation, placing patients in a twilight sleep. In other words, patients are given just enough anesthesia to be comfortable and have a pleasant experience, but are not overly sedated. During all blepharoplasty procedures, an anesthesiologist certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology administers sedation and monitors the patient carefully.

What will recovery from laser eyelid surgery be like?

Laser eyelid surgery causes significantly less bruising than older procedures. While everyone heals at different rates, most patients experience some bruising and swelling, which begin to subside during the first week of recovery. Swelling is usually 50% resolved within a week and the majority of bruising is usually resolved a week to two weeks after surgery. Keeping the head elevated and using cold compresses helps alleviate these symptoms.

Some patients may experience eye dryness, burning, itching, or tearing. These are normal reactions and can be alleviated with eye lubricant drops.

The recovery following laser blepharoplasty typically involves little or no pain. In many cases, patients do not even need to take Tylenol as they recover from the procedure. While it’s recommended that patients take one week off from work, many patients return to work a few days after undergoing the procedure.

Following blepharoplasty, most patients will be able to resume all their normal activities within a few weeks. The majority of patients can resume walking and other light activity one week after surgery and may return to vigorous exercise in approximately two weeks.

Will my features look natural after surgery?

Some patients are concerned that they will come out of eyelid surgery with a startled or “deer-in-the-headlights” look. While aware of these concerns, Dr. Stout approaches his work as a sculptor whose goal is to rejuvenate someone’s face so that the results look natural and refreshed. Many patients even report that the first compliments they receive after their eyelid surgery are directed toward their hair, weight, or increased level of energy. Their family, friends, and colleagues often cannot pinpoint that eyelid surgery has been done — instead, they simply notice a remarkable improvement in appearance.

I am a male patient—will I look natural after laser eyelid surgery?

Blepharoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for both men and women. At Dr. Stout’s Pasadena practice, about 40% of his eyelid surgery patients are men. Male patients are increasingly interested in eyelid rejuvenation as they realize how a tired, worn-down look can affect their social, professional, and personal lives.

Male eyelid surgery has its own set of considerations and techniques. Dr. Stout has extensive experience in treating male patients and takes care to restore the youthful look of the eyelids without giving them an unnatural, feminized look. Dr. Stout’s surgical techniques combined with his experience achieve an understated natural look that blends with the features of the face, especially for male patients.

How long will the results from eyelid surgery last?

Cosmetic laser eyelid surgery has long-lasting results, typically ten to twelve years or more. While blepharoplasty reverses aging and restores eyes to a more youthful state that lasts for many years, the natural aging process will continue over time.

How much does cosmetic laser eyelid surgery cost?

Because each patient is different and each set of eyes is different, a consultation with Dr. Stout is necessary to evaluate your individual needs in order to provide an accurate cost. Once Dr. Stout gets to know you and understands your goals, he will recommend a treatment plan. His fee is all-inclusive and covers the cost of the surgery, on-site surgery center, anesthesia, and all follow-up visits.
